Cold and flu season is creeping up on us so it is the perfect time to think about boosting your immune system. Getting enough sleep, eating lots of veggies and lowering your stress level are just a few of the things you can do on a daily basis to stay healthy. These are all good things for sure, but this time of year I like to add a little something extra. You are probably thinking it must be some kind of crazy supplement, right? Actually, one of my favorite things to use is essential oils. If you are not familiar with the power of essential oils, look no further……I am about to share my secrets!!
Before the introduction of man made medicine, our ancestors relied on homemade remedies to treat ailments. Many of these remedies were derived from plants. And, more often than not they actually worked! I loved to hear my grandma tell stories about some of the concoctions her mom came up with to treat colds, sore throats, upset stomach, ear aches etc. I think my grandma actually liked it when she had a sore throat because she got to sip on a shot of whiskey before going to bed ;). She probably needed that buzz to forget about the fact that she had to sleep with a wet wool sock wrapped around her neck!!
Fast forward to today and we are still using plants as a source of natural medicine. Essential oils, which are extracted from the leaves, roots, flowers and bark of plants, are actually part of the plants immune system. By harvesting these oils, we can replicate this immunological power to boost our own immune system. One way that I like to use essential oils is in a diffuser. Sending these droplets of goodness into the air can help neutralize airborne pathogens and increase your immunity. Diffusers are super affordable and convenient to use. Not to mention your house or office will smell amazing!
Although most essential oils are considered safe, there are certain precautions. Some oils are contraindicated if you are pregnant, have high blood pressure or undergoing treatment for cancer. Also, there are special considerations for young children and older folks who may be frail or bedridden. Be sure to consult your health care provider before using any oils you are not familiar with.
As you can imagine, there are many oils to choose from. I picked 5 of the most common ones that support your immune system:
Oregano Oil – antibacterial, antiviral, stimulates the immune system. Avoid direct contact with mucous membranes or if you are pregnant.
Thyme – boosts the immune system by supporting the formation of white blood cells. Avoid contact with mucous membranes. Do not use if you are pregnant.
Rosemary – relieves respiratory problems; useful in treating infections. Do not use if you are pregnant, have epilepsy or hypertension.
Eucalyptus oil – contains monoterpenes which are effective in treating respiratory illnesses. Avoid use with homeopathic remedies, if you are pregnant or have an estrogen dependent cancer.
Lemon – powerful detoxifier; useful in treating respiratory illnesses. May cause skin irritation when used directly on the skin.
When you purchase your oils, there are some things to look for to ensure you are buying a quality product. First and foremost, read the label! The only ingredient should be the essential oil. Sometimes you may be purchasing a blend of oils or it may contain a carrier oil. Just make sure you recognize all the ingredients. Choose organic whenever possible and look for oils in dark colored glass bottles. This type of bottle will help preserve the integrity of the oils.
Make sure you are buying from a reputable distributor. My favorite brands are Floracopeia and Kate’s Magic. Kate’s is a local company and their products are amazing. They have a storefront downtown and you can also find many of their products at Natural Grocer and Whole Foods. If you do not want to invest in a bunch of individual oils, Kate’s Magic makes a product called Banditos. It is a blend of cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus and rosemary. All of these oils are great for supporting the immune system.
I love Banditos and always carry a small bottle in my purse. If someone is sneezing or coughing around me, I just take a few whiffs! It is like breathing in an extra layer of protection. Of course you may get some strange looks from those around you, but what the heck…..better safe than sick, right?
The recipe below is from David Crow at Floracopeia. You can try this or experiment with making your own blend. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. In the meantime, have fun, take a deep breath and feel the love 😉
